As part of the Cross Yarra Partnership delivering the Metro Tunnel Project, I specialised in informational and service design, producing the visual communications that kept the general public, local residents and businesses informed across every construction site.
The challenge was turning dense, constantly changing technical information (work hours, traffic changes, noise impacts and closures) into material people could understand at a glance. This had to work for a wide range of audiences, from CBD traders to non-English speakers, while works disrupted some of Melbourne’s busiest streets.
My solution was a clear, consistent system built within the Metro Tunnel brand. It included colour-coded site maps with simple legends, an icon set flagging normal, out-of-hours and 24-hour works, and modular layouts for monthly works notifications, delivery and access maps, wayfinding and safety signage.
I also designed workforce travel guides that encouraged public and active transport to ease pressure on local parking, translated content where needed, and promotional flyers for affected traders such as Hungry Jack’s La Trobe St, helping businesses stay visible and keep customers coming while construction continued around them.
